ALC Styria – winning category Big Player: Classic raw material is used in a modern manner by Pabst.

Wood in the form of glue-laminated wood, pellets and even as litter for the Lipizzaners of the Spanish Riding School has led the Zeltweg company Pabst to success.

With the classic raw material from Styria, wood, the company Pabst from Zeltweg has done excellent business since 1940. The company, which is 100 percent family owned, generated last year with 278 employees 82.1 million €. Thus within three years, Pabst was able to increase the turnover by 86.6 percent.

Half of the business in Zeltweg is done in glue-laminated wood, as is used when building halls. 30 percent comes from the field of profile boards and cut wood, respectively ten percent is pellets and diverse smaller business areas. The main turnover markets are Italy with 70 percent and Austria with 25 percent.

”The economic framework conditions were very good last year,” says Johann Pabst, who manages the company together with his cousin Reinhard Pabst.

”We emphasize long-term cooperation with our customers, offer a tailor made service and the same type of delivery – and we have the right size in order to also be able to guarantee this,” is how Johann Pabst explains the key factors to success.

”We want to keep a large amount of the added value in the operation,” says Johann Pabst. “And we don’t want to produce mass items which in the end can be exchanged and can only be sold through the price.”

Therefore there is also always innovation in Zeltweg, like bent glue-laminated wood which is up to 36 meters long and already is in demand from architects who work around the world.

The assessment:

The WirtschaftsBlatt and their partner PricewaterhouseCoopers and KSV1870 this year are selecting AUSTRIA'S LEADING COMPANIES for the tenth time and invited all dynamic companies to participate in this excellent competition.

The criteria

The selection of the most dynamic Austrian company is carried out in a proven form: with the competition AUSTRIA’S LEADING COMPANIES there are three categories in which on a state and national level the winners are determined, namely
  • “Dynamic small companies” (annual turnover 2007 < 10 million €)
  • “Golden middle sized companies” (annual turnover 2007 > 10 million € and < 50 million €) and
  • “Big Player” (annual turnover 2007 > 50 million €)
The award winners are determined by the PwC experts according to a certain key based on the development of the most important economic numbers of the past three years – that is: solely the facts (net turnover, company results, EGT, capital resources) are decisive.
